John Carpenter's 1982 movie is a total masterpiece and a very faithful adaptation to the original story that spawn 1951's The Thing from Another World which was a very loose adaptation of the novel "Who goes there" but due to limited technology they couldn't get the monster right in the 50's yet still a very good movie in it's own ight. In 1982 Carpenter made his movie more faithful to the original source since the creature is actually a shapeshifter.
It bombed in theaters due to being 2 weeks after ET and got bad reviews calling it "gross out" but over the years it became a best selling video, laserdisc, DVD and Blu-ray and earned a cult following including popular at midnight shows and on cable TV. It gets more respect now as one of the best Sci-fi horror movies ever and a triumph for John Carpenter.
The prequel comes out this October in time for halloween, i'm gonna see it and go to Universal Flordia for halloween to see horror nights where they have an attraction based on the 1982 and new prequel.

I watched the trailer for the new prequel and it really just look like a remake to me, i hope it's not, i really hope the explore the mythology of were the creatures came from and why they were in antartica.

I saw the prequel and it was excellent with good effects both old and new, it was as gory and the 1982 movie.
I can't wait to go to Disneyworld and Universal next weekend for 6 days to check out Horror Nights at Universal even to their Thing maze.

I loath it when Carpenter's movie is called a remake of the 1951 movie "The Thing from Another World", they have little in common as the only thing they got is alien and snow, there are little similarities even though Carpenter's movie had a couple of homages like circle of men and opening titles. Both movies are adaptations of John Campbell's original 1938 novella "Who Goes There", i mean they share a name but they are far apart from each other as the location (one in the north pole and the other in the south pole), the discovery and origin of the spaceship, the discovery/nature/methods of the monster (one is a lumbering hulking vampiric vegetable monster that reproduced itself and could only be killed with electricity yet it wasn't the shapeshifting parasitic creature from the story and the other is a shapeshifting parasite that could imitate other lifeforms yet could only be killed by fire), the characters, the situtation of the humans and all that are very different. The 1951 movie is very good but it ranks as one of the worst book to film adaptations of all time, The Carpenter adaptation is by far the quintessential and more faithful adaptation of the story. Remakes and re-adaptations are 2 different things as Carpenter's movie is a re-adaptation and not a remake. Here's the original story: www.outpost31.com/books/who.txt

The Thing prequel was decent but the awful CGI just ruined it for me. Carpenter's The Thing had much better special effects and likeable characters. If your a fan of the 1982 The Thing though, the prequel is worth checking out. It may disappoint you with the special effects though.

The ending was epic Gimbo you have to admit leading up to the 1982 movie.
Say Gimb, have you read the original short story that inspired the 2 separate adaptations in 1951 and 1982 and that Carpenter's movie was the most faithful adaptation?
