So if there is anyone who is interested in hearing how the convention went i guess I'll talk about the whole weekend as seen through my eyes. Tough it out cause it will be a long Story.
So when Thursday arrived i can't explain how excited i was for the convention. I had a long trip ahead of me and all i could think about was having the chance to speak to my hero Don Opper, i had played it out through my mind what exactly i was going to say to him 1000 times. So me and my friend packed our things and headed to Florida. We traveled across 9 states just to attend this convention and by the end of the trip it was well worth it.
After about an hour on the road we stopped at a gas station to get a few drinks and to my surprise peering at me from the top of the drink refrigerator was a MT. Dew Pitch Black. (Yes the one that hasn't been sold in years) apparently they had brought it back for a limited time offer. I quickly grabbed a couple and anxiously walked to the counter and payed for it. Once i opened the bottle and tasted the nostalgic taste of Pitch Black I new that the coming weekend was going to be something special.
After a long and somewhat easy drive we finally made it to Florida were i could only think one thing, "Oh my God I'm in the same state as Don Opper". After the geek attack i had we arrived at the hotel around 6:30am and went inside to see if was possible to check in to our rooms and yet another surprise to me our rooms were all ready to go.. I had a little chat with the hotel clerk who informed me that the Convention guests had already checked in (Oh my God I'm in the same building as Don Opper) he had a chance to talk to Don Opper. Out of curiosity i ask how Don was and he replied "Very down to earth guy, great to talk to" So after checking in and unpacking we did what every tourist in Florida did, We stopped and got some beer, but after that we explored the beach, got our pale white faces burnt to a crisp and then headed back to the hotel to get some sleep.
So after the long drive and the painful sunburn i crashed in the bed as got some sleep. suddenly I'm awakened by my friend who come barging in the hotel room like Kramer from Seinfeld and informs me he spoke to Don Opper down at the swimming pool. So here it is, my hero down at the swimming pool talking to my friend while I'm up in the hotel room asleep. (As you can tell i have wonderful luck)
After missing out once already to meet my hero, i shower, get ready and head down to the convention.. So there i am, waiting in line to purchase my weekend pass, my heart is racing and i can easily say yes i was nervous. So as I'm waiting the convention door pops open and out walks Don Opper, My heart dropped to the ground for standing directly next to me was Charlie Mcfadden the Critter killing bounty hunter himself and all i could think to my self was, "well he looks busy, i don't want to bother him". and just like that i let him pass right on by. Moments later i purchased my tickets and heading into the convention.
The Convention room itself was small but I like it better that way, I don't like having to go room to room just to find people.
As i round the corner I notice 3 tables set up together add sitting directly in the middle is none other then Don Opper. The Convention had just opened so there wasn't very many people in the convention witch made it the most perfect time for me to approach him.
I walked to the table and shook his hand, at this point i am more nervous than i have ever been in my life. I told him how nervous i was and he said "Don't worry, I'm nervous too, I've never done a convention before". I laid down some were around 6 posters to have him sign and he was very surprised that people were still fans of the critters films and that people would pay for his autograph. after he signed all my posters we talked about the Critters films for what seemed like ages, i asked question after question after question. All i can say is that Don Opper was a super nice guy to talk to and i am very honored to have had the opportunity to have met him.
As I'm talking to Don Liane Curtis walks into the room and starts setting up her table next to Dons. Don Turns and introduces me to Liane but Liane stops him in mid sentence and Say's "I know you, You look familiar, we talked before on Myspace a long time ago and we are also facebook friends aren't we". I was very surprised that someone would remember me years later just from talking on Myspace, but i guess she probably didn't have to many people talk to her about Critters. Anyways Me and Liane talked a bit about Critters and she also signed my posters.
I just want to say Liane is one of the nicest people i have ever met. she always seemed interested in talking to everyone no matter what the subject was about. If you ever get the chance to meet Liane don't pass up the opportunity, She is super sweet and still very very attractive.
Friday seemed like the best day of my life i didn't think it could have gotten any better but again i was wrong and Saturday rocked just as much. I walked around around the convention a lot Saturday buying different Critters related items such as magnets and buttons and posters and going back over to talk to Don and Liane from time to time. At one moment Liane stops me and asks me if she could get a photo with me so she could post to her facebook . It was strange cause I have never had a celebrity ask to take a photo with me it's always been the other way around. anyways She asks Don to take the Picture of us and Both of them bicker back and forth about who takes the best photos. It was funny as hell to listen to. anyways Liane asks me to roll my shirt sleeve up so she can get my Critters tattoo in the picture, she thought and Don both thought it was really cool.
After getting the pictures with Liane, Don then pulled his phone out and took a picture of my tattoo ans sent it to his brother Barry who was the producer on all 4 Critters films.
As I started to walk away from the area Dee Wallace stopped me and asked me to help her out and take a photo of her with another fan and me being so nice i decided to help. By this point all 3 of them Don, Liane, and Dee all new me by name talked to me throughout the weekend, i felt like i made 3 new friends.
Later that day I attend the Critters Reunion Q and A Panel and was able to video tape the entire thing, All 40 minutes of it. and during the panel someone asked a question about a song that they didn't know the answer to so they asked me to answer it for them. it was about the Power of the Night Song. also during the panel someone asked about fans and if they had met anyone who was a huge fan and all 3 of them turned and pointed toward me and said it's Chris, he is our biggest fan, he is awesome.. I felt like i was on top of the world.. Anyways the Panel went fantastic and we got to hear some funny stories from the cast and learn some cool facts about the movies as well.
So Saturday wasn't over just yet there was still the Critters 2 showing on the big screen and i have to say it was fantastic, the setup was awesome and the area was beautiful..
I had gotten there a bit early cause i was so damn excited about the show, there was already another film playing, I believe it was Coffey but i only caught the last 15 minutes of it.
So when Coffey was done showing i stood up for a few minutes and a guy behind me yelled Chris, Get out of the way, I turn around and it's Don opper who is trying to see the screen. I walk over to him and take a seat right next to him.
So as we are waiting for them to set up for the Critters 2 showing Liane Curtis walks over next to me and takes a seat, So i have Liane Curtis sitting to my left and Don Opper to my right, as we were getting ready to watch Critters 2.
Once the movie was ready to go they had Don and Liane give an short intro for the film and Liane jumps up to upfront and tosses her purse into my lap and say Here Chris please watch my stuff.
I'm not sure why I'm telling these thing but i figured i would just describe everything that happened to me throughout the weekend.
Don Didn't stay for the entire showing of Critters 2 cause he said he doesn't like to watch movies he is in. As for Liane she was there for most of the show and i have to say it was fantastic to be able to watch critters 2 while drinking a beer sitting next to Liane Curtis. i think it was a once in a life time opportunity that i am grateful to have been ale to experience. in case your wondering, here is a pic of the drive in.
So the last day had approached and it was time for me to pack up and start heading home. I wanted to say goodbye to everyone and thank them for coming out to the convention and how it was an honor to meet them. So when i was saying bye to Liane she gets up and give be a big hug and give me her cell phone number ( I know, Whoo Hoo, Good job Chris. lol) But no this is for me to contact her later about a project i am working on. Thats right everyone i am working on a Critters documentary that i hope to start filming later this year and yes Don Opper and Liane Curtis and Dee Wallace all were interested in doing interviews for it. I'll keep everyone updated once i know more information about it and once i actually start filming.
So to wrap up the convention i have to say even though the guest turnout wasn't very big, Cult Fiction Drive in was the funnest time i have ever had at a convention, i have not heard on bad thing about it, everyone there who attended got to spend lots of personal time with the celebrities. as a guest you couldn't ask for much more. A special thanks goes out to all who put the show on and everyone who worked on helping throughout the weekend.
I had so much fun I even got Sid Haig to record a funny video for my friend who could make it down to the convention.
Also as part for this site and for all the fans on this site i asked both Don opper and Liane Curtis to record intros for this site saying Welcome to Crittersrehatched.
